Anclote Gulf Dog Park in Holiday FL

Anclote Gulf Dog Park in Holiday FL is a furry fun place that is friendly, no-leash, and a great place to take your best buddy to get some exercise and entertainment.

Are Dog Parks Good For Your Dog?
According to the ASPCA, dogs are used to working alongside people; and working hard. Hunting for food was a big part of their lives. Today’s dog spends most of his time alone, sleeps on the couch, and visits the bowl to munch and crunch. They have lots of energy but nowhere to displace it.  They can become bored and overweight which can lead to bad behavior.

Socialization at a dog park can alleviate some of those problems. But says Cesar, do it slowly. Maybe just once a week to start and just a slow introduction. Don’t let him race into a doggy crowd. He will gradually want to move into a social structure and enjoy it.  And it’s great physical and mental exercise for dogs. But only you can decide if dog parks are good for your dog.

People enjoy dog parks too. Socialization with other people is good for many, (especially if they don’t see many people on a daily basis), and the opportunity for some off-leash training is always good for Fido. And it’s a good idea to check out the dog park alone the first time; just to see where he will be playing.

There have been lots of improvements to the park thanks to a generous donation from a local funeral director and huge dog lover, Thomas B. Dobies.  The dog park is open seven days a week from dawn until dusk, so stop by anytime.

Brooker Creek Preserve

Brooker Creek Preserve in Tarpon Springs, FL

Brooker Creek Preserve is at the very northern edge of Pinellas County and it is absolutely wonderful.  A nature spot of 8,700 acres that is the largest natural area in Pinellas County;  and consisting primarily of forested wetlands and pine flatwoods.

The Preserve is not a park but rather a wilderness area that provides both a refuge for plants and creatures; as well as an opportunity for people to explore the natural beauty of wild Florida in the midst of suburbia.

What Does Brooker Creek have?  You can hike on nature trails, wander around the various buildings that house information about the flora and fauna at the Preserve.  There are boardwalks and trails, 9 miles of equestrian trails, environmental education center, picnic areas, classrooms, a music pavilion, and auditorium.

Children love it and there are all kinds of classes to take part in. There are guided tours, and guided hikes, annual events like the Wildflower Festival below.

Brooker Creek Preserve

We were there in October for the Wildflower Festival. There was a butterfly tent that was probably the best butterfly exhibit I have seen. The butterflies were very friendly! We even got to feed them.

Located at 3940 Keystone Road, east of East Lake Road, Tarpon Springs 34688,  it is easy to find. Their phone number is 727-453-6800. To download flyers and pamphlets about the park, click here.

Take the time to visit Brooker Creek Preserve; just the drive in is amazing.; you feel like you are returning to a bit of wilderness and Old Florida. The Preserve protects the Brooker Creek Watershed and is the only stream that enters Lake Tarpon and is a major factor in the water quality of it.

  Hurricane Names 2015 Season

Hurricane Names 2015 Season
is something that’s always interesting reading.

Hurricane Names 2015 SeasonHurricane Sandy image from NOAA

Hurricane season will be upon us soon (June 1).
Names for this year are:

Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida,
Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose,
Sam, Teresa, Victor, Wanda. If more are needed, the Greek Alphabet is used (Alpha, Beta, etc.).

Hurricane Names 2015 Season -How do they choose the names?

The International World Meteorological Organization chooses the names. Originally, Hurricane names were women’s names only. In 1979, the list was changed to include men’s names. Six lists are used in rotation. The 2008 list became the 2014 list. A name is removed and  changed on the list if a storm was deadly or costly. (Andrew, Sandy). Some names seem to be changed just because.

Hurricane Names 2015 Season — Keep in mind that FEMA imposes a 30 day waiting period after the application for flood insurance. So don’t wait till you hear about the first hurricane heading your way.

ARE YOU READY?

If not, you better call your insurance company asap!

Sandhill Crane Babies – It Must Be Spring

Sandhill Crane Babies – It Must Be Spring

Every year, our resident Sandhill Crane couple brings their babies around for us to admire and enjoy.

We know it’s the same couple because they bring their babies to our back door for our admiration and approval, and wait for the seeds to come out. This year’s new crop of babies is very cute. They were born about two weeks ago and have already grown so much bigger.

Sandhill Crane Babies – It Must Be Spring

Sandhill Crane Babies - It Must Be Spring

Sandhills mate for life, they have one or two babies. Sadly the babies don’t always make it especially if Spring turns back to something cold and nasty. Of course, every year, I hope for the best for these little ones.

Sandhill Crane Babies - It Must Be Spring

They are fun to watch with those spiky little legs and not much in the way of feathers. They have to really run to keep up with Mom and Dad’s long strides.  The cranes raise them for about 9-10 months.

Enjoy this Florida moment!
